Fort Stewart shooting leaves five US soldiers wounded as Army sergeant arrested

Five soldiers have been wounded following a shooting at the United States Army's Fort Stewart base in Georgia, with the suspect, identified as Army Sergeant Quornelius Radford, now in custody, military officials have confirmed. The incident unfolded on Thursday morning local time in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area of the base, triggering a temporary lockdown of Fort Stewart and several nearby schools. Brigadier General John Lubas, commander of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said the suspect opened fire at his workplace using a personal handgun before he was 'immediately and without hesitation' tackled by fellow soldiers. Military authorities say the wounded soldiers were initially treated at the scene before being transferred to Winn Army Community Hospital for further care. Their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening. Law enforcements were first alerted to reports of an active shooter at 10:56am ET. Fort Stewart was placed on lockdown shortly after 11:04am and the suspect was apprehended at 11:35am. The lockdown remained in place for approximately one hour. Out of 'an abundance of caution,' three schools outside the base were also temporarily locked down, according to the Liberty County School System. Footage shared on social media showed military personnel evacuating from the scene. The FBI's Atlanta division has confirmed it is aware of the incident. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences in a social media post, saying he was 'saddened by today's tragedy'. 'We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,' Kemp said. Congressman Buddy Carter, who represents the district that includes Fort Stewart, said he was "monitoring the situation." "Please join me in prayers for the casualties, their families, and the brave law enforcement officers working to protect our community," he wrote on Twitter. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation and is following developments closely. "The White House is monitoring the situation," she posted on X. Fort Stewart, located around 64km (40 miles) southwest of Savannah, spans nearly 280,000 acres and is the largest US Army base east of the Mississippi River. It houses thousands of soldiers assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division and their families. Authorities say the motive behind the attack remains unclear and the investigation is ongoing.
